What is Cha Gao Tea?
Cha Gao Tea (茶膏), also known as tea paste or tea essence, is a highly concentrated form of tea.
Cha Gao Tea is a concentrated tea extract traditionally made from Puer, used to brew strong tea quickly. It’s a historical form of instant tea that’s powerful, rare in authentic form, and still valued by some tea connoisseurs today.
- Traditionally made by boiling tea leaves for many hours until the liquid reduces into a thick, dark paste.
- Historically used in Ancient China, especially during the Song and Ming dynasties.
- It was prized for its medicinal properties, portability, and convenience.
Cha Gao Tea now comes in many different flavours, with manufacturers producing a wide range for the massive internal tea market in China. Cha Gao is not often found in western tea shops, and we are lucky to stock it.
How Cha Gao is used
- You only need a small amount dissolved in hot water to make tea.
- Often used in Pu-erh tea culture (especially with ripe Puer).
- Some modern versions are marketed as instant high-grade tea, though quality varies.
Traditional vs Modern Cha Gao
| Traditional Cha Gao | Modern Cha Gao |
|---|---|
| Handmade, slow-simmered | Often industrially extracted |
| Thick, tar-like texture | Powder or concentrated cubes |
| Rare and expensive | Widely available, quality mixed |
| Medicinal/ritual use | Convenience focus |
Flavor & Characteristics
- Wide range of flavors, including aged puer and wild teas.
- Very intense, often bitter-sweet and earthy.
- Can have the deep fermented taste of aged tea.
- Used sparingly due to its strength.
