Peppermint Tea – Mentha balsamea
Peppermint tea is one of those simple pleasures that never goes out of style. Fresh, cooling, and naturally caffeine-free, it’s the kind of cup that works at any time of day, whether you’re starting the morning gently or winding down in the evening.
Of course, this is not a tea in the true sense of the word. True tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, the leaves used to make green, oolong, black, and white teas. Peppermint, by contrast, is an herbal infusion, made simply by steeping dried mint leaves in hot water.
Our peppermint comes from Mentha balsamea, a hybrid species of mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint, a fragrant variety known for its clean, rounded flavour. Once infused, the leaves release a bright herbal aroma and a refreshing taste that feels both uplifting and soothing at the same time.
A Herb with a Long History
Peppermint has been used for thousands of years, long before it became a common herbal tea. Ancient civilisations valued mint for its fragrance and its role in food and herbal remedies.
Records show mint being used in Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where it was added to drinks, medicine, and even used to scent rooms. The plant was especially appreciated for its cooling quality and refreshing aroma.
Over time, peppermint became a staple herb across Europe and Asia. When dried leaves began to be brewed as an infusion, peppermint tea quickly became known for its clean flavour and calming qualities.
Today, it remains one of the most widely enjoyed herbal teas in the world.
Our Peppermint tea can be added with Black Tea to create an Arabic-style black tea, Moroccan mint tea, or, if you fancy something interesting for the summer, why not try the historic Arabic drink Sekanjabin, a very refreshing syrup made with a few simple ingredients that you are sure to have in your cupboard.
Flavour & Aroma
Peppermint tea is wonderfully straightforward, but that simplicity is part of its charm.
Expect:
- A bright, cooling aroma
- Fresh herbal sweetness
- A smooth, clean finish
- A gentle natural sweetness without bitterness
The liquor is light and refreshing, leaving a pleasant cooling sensation that lingers after each sip.
Naturally Caffeine-Free
Because peppermint is a herbal infusion rather than a true tea, it contains no caffeine. That makes it a great choice for:
- Evening drinking
- After meals
- A refreshing break during the day
It’s also one of those teas that feels good both hot and iced.
How to Brew
Peppermint is easy to prepare and forgiving to brew.
Hot infusion
- 2–3g peppermint leaves
- 250ml water
- 95–100°C
- Steep for 5–7 minutes
Iced peppermint tea
- Brew double strength
